Novice (A1/A2)
This is a beginner Spanish course designed for students with little or no previous exposure to the Spanish language. Students will gain essential conversational, listening, reading, and writing skills to help them navigate everyday situations (e.g. greetings, exchanging personal information, ordering a meal, etc.).
The course contents and activities are aligned with the NOVICE proficiency standards outlined by the American Council on the Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as well as the A1/A2 levels of the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR). Students may use the proficiency charts found in the Language Competencies & Grading Rubrics section of this syllabus to determine if this course meets their language needs (pg. 6).
Academic Credit Equivalency: Study abroad courses with homestays provide an immersion environment in which language learning extends beyond the classroom. This four-week course entails 12 contact hours per day (240 total), the equivalent of 6 university credit hours.
Intermediate (B1/B2)
This is an intermediate Spanish course designed for students who have taken at least 1 Spanish course or have had significant exposure to Spanish in a work or home environment. Students will acquire speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that will allow them to express themselves about familiar topics (work, home, school, etc.) across present, past, and future time frames.
The course contents and activities are aligned with the Intermediate proficiency standards outlined by the American Council on the Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as well as the B1/B2 levels of the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR). This is an advanced Spanish course designed for students who have taken at least 2 Spanish courses and are able to communicate across present, past, and future time frames in Spanish. This course will help students expand their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills preparing them to use Spanish professional and academic settings.
The course contents and activities are aligned with the Advanced proficiency standards outlined by the American Council on the Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as well as the C1/C2 levels of the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR). Professional Spanish & Service Learning
This is an advanced Spanish course designed for students who are able to communicate in written and oral modes across present, past, and future time frames. This course pairs community service learning with structured course work to prepare students to use Spanish in professional settings. Students will spend two hours in the classroom and three hours at their professional service-learning sites each day. The classroom time will be used to review grammatical structures, vocabulary, and cultural concepts needed for community placements.
